Detox Support
How We Support Withdrawal and Detox
Truly effective alcohol and drug addiction treatment programs address more than just the causes of the addiction.
Treatment must also address the medical challenges one will experience when recovering from long-term substance abuse. Our clients’ safety is our number one priority. Detoxification can present varying difficulty depending on many factors.
These factors include: the total length of substance abuse, the presence of other co-occurrent addictive disorders, and the overall physical health of the patient.
Our medical and clinical staff have decades of experience in helping patients through alcohol and drug withdrawal symptoms.
We at Sivana provide the highest quality care ensuring the utmost comfort and dignity for our clients in this sensitive process.
Alcohol and drug addiction withdrawal are serious medical conditions that require treatment from addiction rehabilitation specialists.
One feature that makes Sivana Bali Rehab Centre a comprehensive residential treatment centre is our 24-hour medical supervision. Clients undergoing withdrawal, as well as family and friends, can be assured that their safety will be closely monitored. Our attentive staff is always available to address any symptoms or complications
Detox or Detoxification from alcohol and/or drugs is arguably the most physically challenging phase of the rehabilitation process. Here at Sivana Bali we can cater to both the medical and psychological effects of the detox process. Our detox program is fully medically supported, succinct with western standards. We have qualified medical experts in the field of addiction treatment on call. As well BIMC Hospital is on standby at all times should the need arise. Support staff and counselors available to assist anytime with the psychological and emotional issues that may arise throughout this process.
Stopping the use of drugs or alcohol without proper supervision can trigger serious medical complications. Detox from alcohol or drug addiction should never be attempted at home. Due to the inherent potential dangers, substance abuse detoxification should, without exception, only be done under qualified medical supervision.
Emotional support is paramount to a successful detox.
In substance detox, we recognize the need to provide continuous emotional support throughout the process. We recognize the magnitude of this important first step in committing to treatment and how it influences the following recovery processes.
If the initial detox is done here with us, it is only once clients are deemed physically capable that they are encouraged to engage in the activities and elements of the program (at pace that is not detrimental to their health or emotional wellbeing). If clients have detoxed elsewhere, they are immediately introduced to individual and group work, and expected to keep up with the daily program demands, depending on their clearance from our medical team.
A ‘short stay’ program can be designed to fit your specific needs and wants today. We have a maximum of 6 clients staying at the villa complex at any one time. One of our major strengths is that we are able to truly cater to the fact that all 6 clients will have different needs. Of course, you will share the most basic of goals – to learn how to live a new and fulfilling life drink and drug free.
If you have any fears about what to expect from rehab or addiction treatment we have designed this program for you. From our years of experience in this process we can assure you that we offer the quickest, most comfortable and safest path to recovery.
Drug Detox
What to know and what to expect
Any number of issues can arise within the first few hours of drug detox, and these mainly arise due to specific drug withdrawal symptoms (each drug has different physical and psychological withdrawal effects), the physical and emotional health of the person, along with any pre-existing medical conditions. During this process, our medical and psychological team can facilitate and assist our clients step by step through this challenging process. Some common issues that may rise during this period consist of: violence, symptoms of psychosis, injury, medical illness and threat to oneself.
The level of severity depends largely upon the following:
- Length of addiction.
- The combination of drugs abused, including alcohol.
- The dosage of the drug of choice at the time the client enters detox.
- Any co-existing physical or mental disorders.
Common symptoms that can also surface throughout the various levels of drug withdrawal are classified into three different areas of impact:
Emotional Withdrawal Symptoms
- Mood disturbances
- Poor concentration
- Anxiety
- Restlessness
- Irritability
- Depression
- Social Isolation
- Sleep disturbances
Physical Withdrawal Symptoms
- Chills
- Sweating
- Tightness in the chest
- Difficulty breathing
- Muscle tension
- Racing heart / Palpitations
- Tremors
- Flu-like symptoms
- Headache
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
Dangerous Withdrawal Symptoms
- Grand mal seizures
- Strokes
- Hallucinations
- Delirium tremens (DTs)
These may also be accompanied by substance-specific withdrawal symptoms that are discussed more at a more in-depth level. However, to cover a few examples, opiate-based medications and benzodiazepines may cause seizures and audio and visual hallucinations; heroin and opiates may cause muscle and bone pain or discomfort; cocaine and crystal meth often cause depression and suicidal thoughts. Due to the severity of psychological issues that are brought about during the drug detox process, it is never recommended that people attempt to detox at home and not unattended.
Drug Detox Methods:
There are three main forms of drug detox processes: Cold Turkey, Short-term Medical Detox, and Long-term Medical Detox. All of these three options are effective and should never be conducted without some form of medical supervision and support. Which detox process is right for you will depend on the previously mentioned issues and the drug(s) from which the person is detoxing. As mentioned above, here at Sivana Bali, we can cater to each and every need that may arise during your detox process, from physical to emotional.
Alcohol Detox
What to know and what to expect
Alcohol detox, also known as Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome, can be a very dangerous and life-threatening process. The range of severity is based on a number of different factors, namely how much and how long the person has been drinking, their general health and any pre-existing health conditions, and also the number of detox processes the person has been through previously.
Minor alcohol withdrawal symptoms tend to appear between 6 to 12 hours after a person has ceased drinking (also known as a “hangover”). These symptoms often include some, if not all, of the following:
- Headache
- Sweating
- Vomiting
- Shaky hands
- Mild anxiety
- Nausea
- Insomnia
As the level of alcohol withdrawal worsens, visual, auditory or tactile hallucinations may occur between 12 to 24 hours after the cessation of drinking. However, most people who experience this are aware that the hallucinations/sensations are not real; it is not the same as hallucinations associated with DTs (Delirium Tremens).
Seizures are another possible side effect that increases with the severity of the detox process. They usually first appear between 24 and 48 hours after someone stops drinking. The risk of seizures is particularly higher in people who have previously undergone multiple detoxifications.
DTs are one of the most severe aspects to alcohol withdrawal. Symptoms usually surface between 48 and 72 hours after cessation of drinking. Risk factors are enhanced by the following: a previous history of experiencing withdrawal seizures or DTs, acute medical illness, abnormal liver function, and older age. Symptoms of DTs, which usually surface around 5 days after cessation, include:
- Low-grade fever
- Profuse sweating
- High blood pressure
- Racing and irregular heartbeat
- Disorientation, confusion, and severe anxiety
- Hallucinations (primarily visual) which cannot be distinguished from reality
- Seizures
- Severe tremors
- Death is possible in about 1%-5% of people
Stabilization is the main component of all our detox processes, and this refers to both the physical and psychological aspects of the detox process. Assisting the client to make it through this process is one of which we take seriously and cautiously here at Sivana Bali. If and when medication is required to assist in this process, gradual and medically monitored tapering is essential to ensure the client has a smooth recovery and is ready to begin the rehabilitation program. Our team is well qualified, able and prepared to deal with the diverse range of reactions that come with this process.
Since addiction is classified as a disease and/or illness, it is often accompanied by symptoms which existed prior. These often include many psychological “symptoms” such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, and low self-esteem, amongst a number of others. New recovery skills are needed to help cope and deal with these underlying issues/symptoms; therefore, we strongly encourage follow-up services to help facilitate a new life after detox and an easier transition into clean and sober living.
